(no pun intended)
Okay, I'm stumped and I need the help of the vast collective wisdom of the internet. I realize I'm setting myself up for a bashing but very few people actually read this blog on a regular basis so I figure I'm pretty safe.
My son and I were having a conversation and I really have no idea where or how it started. Where it ended up was a question pertaining to amputees. And I guess that brings up a question in itself doesn't it?
In this age of political correctness, can I say amputee? Is there a more proper term? Or should it just be person-who-has-had-a-limb-amputated? Though not necessarily hyphenated to death, I suppose.
But I digress.
The original question pertains to the part of the limb that remains after an amputation. Does that have a name?
I know, I know. I'm risking sounding like a complete dork but I would seriously like to know. And the nice thing about the internet is, even though you may laugh at my dorkness, I don't have to hear it, which is what would happen if I asked a coworker.
Currently, my boy swears to me it's called a 'nub'. And I'm just really not buying that.
Though I'm not that concerned about turning my teenager all P.C. I would like to teach him how to be polite, courtesy, and senstive to other people's feelings.
I googled it, of course, but I either got medical definitions that are just way beyond me or some really really bad fetish sites that will probably get me fired.
So if you happen to know, or know where I can find out, please enlighten me so that I may pass it on to the boy.

I have no idea but I would think nub would be acceptable to someone missing an appendage. Sure beats..."what the hell is that!?"
I think it's a stump. At least, that's what I'm going to call it after I chop off the arms of this annoying customer of mine named Juliette.
OK...so I had some time to explore..lol. Karla is right from what I can gather it is called a stump or residual limb. Google either.
From what I found by googling vetreran and amputation (thinking that would filter out the work-banned sites) was that amputee is still the correct term for the person. As for the remaining limb, that is exactly the words I ran across. Residual limb sounds just as respectful. I'd avoid using nub or stump unless you know the person very very well and they are comfortable with their physical challenges.

I think it is called stump but then you would have to get all PC so as to not offend the people that can't handle the word stump.

I've called it a stump for years. I'd go with any of them, stump, nub or risidual limb.
It's still amputee and the medical profession calls it a stump so why shouldn't we. Actually, that is the correct term. My mom uses it to describe what's left of her leg even to strangers.

i know i'm late for this.....sorry........but they are right, amputee and stump are acceptable terms. even those of us in the disability related professions are growing sick of the extreme end of person first language (i.e. person with a disability; person with brain injury; person with a hole in their head). i will tell you that MOST people with any disability don't really give a rat's behind about the person first language. they don't, however, like to be called "crip", "retard", or "handicapped" for the most part. it's ok for one wheelchair user to call another wheelchair user a crip but an able bodied person would best refrain from that term.
Actually, it is called a residual limb. I know this because my boyfriend is an amputee. AND, he is currently riding his bike from one end of the UK to the other, 1,000 miles.
residual limb sounds a bit too PC for me...
"oh that, that's the residue left from my arm. Fuck you, it's not a nub!"
