Poll

If you were a 30-something professional woman who started going gray at the age of 19, and then spent the next 13 years dying your hair every different color imaginable, who found that the last time you went 'natural' (when you were pregnant) that your hair was now 80% gray and are now considering the fact that since this was more then 5 years ago you are probably now 100% gray…..

Would you just say fuck it and let yourself go gray?
Especially after you saw how fab these women look?

And if you did decide to go for the gray, how would you go about it? I mean, just quit dyeing and let it grow out? Or is there a better (faster) way to go about removing color from hair so as it's not a year-long-two-tone-hair-color process?

I had a professional do really heavy pale blond streaks so the grow out was not noticed. I get questions about Who does your color all the time. I love it. I am actually growing it longer probably to my shoulders now too. Go for it. you can always dye it agin if you hate it. I wish I had done it at lot sooner.

I saw those pics earlier today and those ladies look fabulous.

I think it all depends on the person and what makes you feel your best. I don't look at gray hair as a bad thing. I can't convince Lori to let her hair go natural but I don't nag her about it either.

Try it. You might be surprised at how nice it looks.

Those women do look fabulous, and I bet they would no matter what hair color they had. You probably would too. Sure, why not give it a try?

My mom went straight from strawberry blond to white, but she dyes her hair. It think it'd be pretty cool if my hair did the same, but gray is awesome too.

I stopped dying my hair two years ago and only highlighted it once to help the transition. My natural color isn't as vibrant, but I get a lot of compliments on it despite taht.

I'm sure you'll look awesome and I'm positive thing will agree....

I think the main thing is you've got to be happy and as long as your happy colour is only a colour any way

I know where you are coming from. My hair started turning gray at 18. I'm terrified to see what my "real" hair looks like now. Judging by the color of my roots, its going to be white. I'm afraid to let it go natural. I'm afraid that I will look OLD. I don't feel old so why should I look old? Let us know what you decide to do.

Gray hair can be gorgeous. It's all about getting a fantastic cut and the attitude of the person.

You are so fun and fabulous I think gray will be a huge success on you.

Go for it!!!

Personally, at your age, I would wait. I think it *could* age you and who the hell needs that?

that being said, it can be pulled off and look quite good - I would just be afraid.

He's no help making these kinds of decisions because he has no preference, would love me no matter what and likes the idea of just doing whatever you want. Thing never looks the same way twice...Between long hair, short hair - he even shaved it off completely last winter - beards, goatees, mustaches, and everything in between. He asked once if it bothered me and I told him I thought it was cool because it's like I get to fuck a different guy every weekend. LOL

Anyway....before posting this thread, I emailed Thing the link and my thoughts and asked "Should I go for it?"

His only reponse back said simply, "I love you."

I used to only highlight my hair. Then the silver sort of took over, and I decided to go whole hog and dye my base color the color it's SUPPOSED to be, AND highlight it! Sure it costs me $80 every 6 weeks or so, but I'm afraid that waist-length silver hair won't look right, and I'm not willing to cut it. With your length, I think you could pull it off okay by having a professional do the work. Just ask yourself though... are you really ready to go gray? And what do the kids think?

*sigh* I've been fighting with this myself. Mostly ... how do I remove the color on the ends?

I started going gray when I was 18. I'm probably about 40% gray. My problem is that they grays are fragile, wirey and break off short. (Unlike my made-of-steel normal hairs.) The grays never hold color either, so I don't know why I bother. But ... I always look like I have a million little antennas sticking out of my head. It would be so much simpler if I could make the rest of the hair color look like the antennas.

At 30 something, I'd keep dying it. When you're late 40-something, THEN let it go. But then I'm late 40s and -heh- I hardly have any gray :)

Thumper, it's a good thing I like you so much. :P

Bonnie, from what I've been reading lately, frequent deep conditioning is the key to controlling wire-y grays.

CC...honestly, I never considered asking the kids. I don't tell them what to do with their hair so I don't think they'd care what I did to mine.

Welcome to all the new commentors!

omg no dont go and let yourself get old already; theres plenty of time for that later!
Also as a woman ages her hair should get shorter. Anyone who keeps long grey hair looks megayears older. A country singing star ruined her career by keeping long grey hair (Emmylou Harris)
Those women in your link look old and haggard, really!Stay as young as you can as long as you can, hon. Thing won't tell you but c'mon, what hub wants an old grey mare?
